Abstract

The objective of this contribution is to analyze if some syntactic and semantic phenomena observed in a specific variety of Spanish spoken in the Spanish Basque Country are particular to this variety or if they appear also in another variety of Spanish spoken in the Iberian Peninsula. We compared their occurrences in a corpus of interviews with 20 monolingual speakers from the Basque city of Getxo with their presence or absence in a spoken corpus from the Catalan city of Barcelona. Some of the analyzed phenomena—such as the preverbal double negation, the substitution of the imperfect or pluperfect subjunctive by the conditional or the use of ya in a preverbal position with an affirmative meaning—have repeatedly been qualified as characteristics of Basque Spanish. This claim will be put to a statistical test. The results show that in two of all cases there is actually a significant correlation between the variable origin and the analyzed phenomena.
