Abstract

The theories gathered in this study on the evolution of the picaresque novel indicate that the works included under this category are not homogeneous. However, temporal and geographical criteria are more precise, as this is one of the most significant legacies of the Spanish literary tradition and is framed within the Golden Age. Nevertheless, various authors draw attention to the recurrence of picaresque narrative elements in literature from later centuries. Therefore, after presenting an overview of the picaresque tradition that exposes its defining characteristics in the context of its origins, as well as its significance over time and space, an analysis of the children's book Antón Retaco (1955) by the Spanish writer María Luisa Gefaell is carried out in order to examine some characteristics that evoke Golden Age narrative and how they adapt to a new literary context.
