Abstract

The adaptations for young people of canonical literature – aiming to reduce the existing linguistic and cultural gaps between the time of the reception of the text and that of its writing and, consequently aim to provide these readers in bloom a contact with the literary canon (Müeller, 2013)– make use of a series of simplifying procedures, which tend to coincide with some of the hypertextual operations of textual reformulation proposed by Gérard Genette (1989) in Palimpsestes. Based on these theoretical assumptions, we try to understand, on the one hand, why and what is the purpose of canonical texts –particularly some of the tales by Eça de Queirós– the target of literary adaptations for young people and on the other, analyze Genette’s modalities of textual reformulation present in A aia, adapted by Luísa Ducla Soares from the homonymous queirosian tale inserted in the collection Seis Contos de Eça (2000).
