The reflections expressed in this paper concern conversational dynamics and adopt a pragmatic view based on the social function of language. Dialogicity involves the use of discourse marking which facilitates intersubjective processing in communicative interaction. The topic to be addressed is how certain discourse markers may encode this input of relation management metalinguistically, and the case of politeness could be illustrative. We highlight the difficulties in defining this field and address the following problems (1) the dearth of a shared model of Spanish politeness, (2) the use of psycholinguistic notions lacking clear definition, and (3) the effect of context on markers’ descriptions
