Abstract

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the extension of the aoristic use of the compound perfect tense in prehodiernal contexts in the speech of western Cantabria, a variety in which ―according to the existing data to date― the simple form was predominant regardless of its temporal or aspectual value. To this end, a survey was conducted in three speech communities in the area (San Vicente de la Barquera, Cabezón de la Sal, Potes), which considered various social variables (gender, age, and education level of informants) and also took into account two linguistic factors (the position of the temporal adjunct of the preterite, and the semantic aspect of the verb). The results show that the aoristic use of the compound perfect tense in prehodiernal contexts has generalized in this area, although more slowly in the areas farthest from the influence of the speech of the capital of the Region, Santander, which functions as a prestige model.
