Abstract

The satires of Pero Garcia Burgales and Pedro d’Ambroa against a man who died during an episode of flatulence coincide on several points with the death of Diego López de Haro, who was in open rebellion against Alfonso X, and his succession by his son Lope in 1254. Possibly, a satire by Alfonso X about an old and ugly lady with the same imperfection is really directed toward López de Haro’s widow Guillelma de Bearn. Also, perhaps, these satires are related to other compositions displaying similar scatological characteristics.
