Abstract

Conjunctions have been considered as paratactic linking devices in classic grammars. When in 19th century syntax became the study of sentence as a grammatical unit two basic relations wereconsidered: coordination and subordination. Conjunctions were then classified as either coordinating orsubordinating. Coordinating conjunctions were easily identified. The rest of them were all consideredsubordinating, irrespective of the important differences that could be found among them concerningtheir syntagmatic behaviour. This paper aims to classify conjunctions according to their behaviour inrelation to the unit they introduce. Other criteria to describe subordinated clauses, currently used, butnot always accurate, have been discarded
