Abstract

This paper analyzes the creation of the Institute of Education Sciences (ICE) of the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1969, collecting the previous experience of the Training School for Teachers of Intermediate Level, created in 1964.

The ICEs are one of the points designed by The General Education Act of 1970 to bring the Spanish educative scene to the level of the European countries. The training of teachers was really behind and required urgent measures. Primary School Teachers received practical training during their studies, as it continues happening today. But it was not so in the case of the Secondary School Teachers, who were demanded theoretical knowledge without receiving the tools to communicate it in the classroom. To solve this lack it was devised a Course of Pedagogical Aptitude (CAP), which soon became a heavy demand for students. This fact led to successive changes until being replaced by the actual Teachers’ Training Masters.

The CAP of the University of Santiago was followed by a very high number of students in a period of almost forty years, between 1970 and 2009. Many of the former students are today Teachers in Secondary Schools and in other educative centres. Because of that it is relevant to study the evolution of the entity responsible for their pedagogical training.
