The poetics and philosophy of loneliness and death in the spiritual evolution of Antero de Quental

Abstract
In Portugal, Antero de Quental is the model of man who assumed in his existence the modernity coordinates. During his “spiritual” evolution, the period between 1871 and 1885, he assumes particular relevance because a group of interior conflicts which will shape his existence, his philosophy and his poetics emerge, highlighting the topics of loneliness and death. The purpose of this article is, from a historical-critical perspective, to recognize the specificity of these topics in the work of the poet and philosopher during the above mentioned period. This critical reflection will be structured in three successive and complementary sections: the existential conflicts, the philosophical answer and the poetical expression about the issues concerned.
