Abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine the deletion of the que complementiser in 638 complement clauses within a corpus of archive documents from Málaga (Spain) dating from the second half of the 19th century. More particularly, the corpus includes 45 council minutes from 1861 to 1875. We analyze the data following the methodology of language variation studies (software RBRUL). We also compare the results of our study with the results of a similar corpus of documents from 1701 to 1815, in order to analyze not only the degree of omission of the que complementiser during that period (18th – 19th centuries), but also the grammatical factors that cause this kind of variation.
