Abstract

In 1806, the Andalusian academic Joaquín Juan Flores presented to the Royal Spanish Academy (rae) his plan for the reform of Spanish orthography. Despite its repercussion within this institution, this interesting text has gone unnoticed in the historiographical studies on the rae and the debates on the reform of Spanish orthography. The specific objectives of this paper focus on: a) analyzing the content of this text and the votes that the different academics developed from it; b) investigating the arguments put forward by academics in favour or against the reforms; c) examining the academic decisions in connection with all proposals involved, and d) studying their scope and significance in subsequent academic publications, especially the 8th edition of Ortografía (1815). The final results of this research will present new ideas regarding the orthographic reform of the rae and will also serve to redefine the different tendencies with regard to the internal discussions that exist within the institution, in contrast to the official doctrines of its publications.
