The western hispanic lexical family organized around the Galician maraballa and Portuguese maravalha probably stems partially from a modified derivation of barba, and not from Latin mala folia, as it is usually admitted. Such hypothesis is supported in the present study mainly discussing some concepts of this family that are associated with plants, and comparing them with other Gallo-romanic and Hispanic uses of barba and its derivations, which are consistent with the proposed hypothesis.
