This paper presents the results of a research carried out among Spanish university students regarding the degree of explicitation of connection procedures in written expository texts. Results show that relation explicitation is never higher than thirty per cent. This paper also presents an in-depth study into the formal nature of the most common connectors as well as an analysis of which are the most frequent connectors and which connector groups are most used in expository texts. The research carried out here leads us to conclude that connectors do not really connect, but reveal a textual relation which already exists and on which discourse cohesion is based.
