Abstract

This paper deals with Spanish lexical reduplication. After differentiating this phenomenonfrom other structures with which it has been related in the literature, we study its morphological, syntactic and semantic characteristics. Next our attention is focused on the particular case of nominallexical reduplications (café café ‘real coffee’, lana lana ‘real whool’), that are put in relation tointensifying appositive structures (visita relámpago ‘flying visit’, situación límite ‘extreme situation’).Finally, we outline an analysis that tries to account for the two main problems raised by nominal lexicalreduplications: their lexical or syntactic nature and the origin of their semantic interpretation.
