Abstract

This article presents a theoretical approach to different modes of relationship between the notions of distanciation and proximity in the interpretative procedures. This path starts with the expansion of the methodology of semiotic analysis toward different cultures by Clifford Geertz’ interpretative anthropology (1973), passes by the reappraisal of Hans-Georg Gadamer’s hermeneutics (1975) by Paul Ricoeur (1981) and by the political-aesthetics of Jacques Rancière (2000), ending in the formulation of the concept of remediation by the American media theorists Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin (2000). Finally, illustrating, and at the same time advancing our argument about the analytical potential of the pair distanciation/participation for a hermeneutics of the new textualities, we undertook an analysis of Immersion (2009), a video installation by Harun Farocki.
