Abstract

This paper deals with the so-called non-matching concealed questions, structures characterized as PPs that violate the subcategorization frames of transitive verbs and that semantically are equivalent to indirect questions (Sé {con los problemas que se enfrentan/con lo que se enfrentan}). After discussing various proposals in the field of descriptive Spanish grammar, an alternative notion of concealed question will be proposed according to which these structures are concealed questions, but not non-matching concealed questions, since they are not really PPs. Obviously, the hypothesis presented here modifies the commonly held ideas about the distribution of these structures.
