Abstract

The aim of this work is to analyse five letters written by Antonio Estada, from Calvià (Majorca), between 1789 and 1790. He was born into a family of notaries; as a consequence, his letters show his familiarity with notarial documents, mixed with some other features that are typical of semiliterate writters. In particular, Estada’s graphical usage shows his management of the writing conventions of the time, together with certain peculiarities that point to the orality of a Catalan speaker, which results in a particular reorganization of the graphic system. Thus, through the analysis of these letters, this paper tries to underline the value that texts produced by non-professional writters have for diachronic linguistics, especially in the context of language contact.
