Abstract

In the Galician-speaking area of the province of Zamora there is a surprisingly wide use of the suffix -icho/-icha in place names. This suffix does appear in Galician toponymy, but only very occasionally. However, in Zamora, the area with microtoponyms containing this suffix coincides with that in which Galician has traditionally been used (As Portelas, Requeixo e Calabor), and helps to draw the boundary between Zamoran Galician and other Galician varieties in the west and the north, and between Galician and Sanabrian Leonese in the east. This paper describes the linguistic area of this suffix.
