Abstract

The morphological study of elements like cardi(o)-, which makes up compounds like cardiology or cardiopathy, involves several difficulties. The most important one is related to their morphological status: are they prefixes or stems? Another problem is the classification of these components. In this paper we present the most recent typology of the romance sphere: that of Iacobini & Giuliani (2010), which applies to Italian. After offering the pros and cons of this classification, we propose a new typology which includes, at least for Spanish, two types of stems: the Graeco-Latin stems and the shortened stems.
