Abstract

Throughout his work, Mill presents antagonism as the most effective remedy to combat moral, intellectual and political stagnation, a special peril that threatens modern society. This article’s aim is to clarify the nature and limits of antagonism, as envisaged by Mill. It focuses on its perpetual and systematical character and argues that antagonism is a key component of the “advanced liberalism” he subscribed.
