Abstract

This article studies the function of the graphic image in the illustrated edition of the first two series of Episodios Nacionales (1882-1885). An attempt is made to highlight the random relationship of physiognomic and props continuity between the imaginary chronography proposed by Galdós to build his characters over time and the evolutionary interpretation of the changes suggested by the various cartoonists who try to express them. It is a question of conjecturing if before the privileged reader-user of the luxurious illustrated edition, the presence of the graphic figures replaced, completed or distorted the cognitive perception of the character. And if, in a way, Galdós, as editor and promoter of this graphic version of his own work, anticipated inter-artistic narrative disciplines ―cinema, comics, photo novels…― that were to be fully developed in the 20th century.
