Phonological competence in Portuguese as a non-native language: rhotics

Abstract
The persistence of a non-native pronunciation is a recognized fact in second language acquisition research. Among the factors that explain this, regardless of different theoretical frameworks, prior linguistic knowledge occupies a prominent place. Not only the conditioning related to the already trained articulation skills is at issue, but also, and above all, the ability to recognise/define (new) targets accurately. This work intends to add to the description of the interphonology of three groups of learners whose native languages are Spanish, Italian and French. More specifically, the issue concerns an area of the consonant phonological system in which these three languages are completely unlike one another and differ from Portuguese: rhotics. Data were collected in a corpus of oral productions, and the levels of convergence and deviations were analysed. The results show different patterns related to the native language and to the syntagmatic context in which the consonant appears.
