Abstract

The traditional epistemic approach to mood, based on the distinction between the real/factual and the nonreal/non factual, though often considered inadequate as a model for the Spanish mood as a whole, shows highly explanatory in the specific field of subordinate clauses of time. However, clauses introduced by después (de) pose a challenge to this approach. In this paper, an alternative model, built on the theoretical principles and instruments of cognitive linguistics, is proposed for both antes (de)- and después (de)-clauses, whereby the use of the subjunctive in these constructions is attributed to the relevance of the adverb’s inherent viewpoint on the construal and epistemic assessment of the subordinate process.
