Abstract

As a fundamental figure for understanding the development of Galician architecture and architectural thought in the last third of the 20th century, Cesar Portela’s reflections on territory (Pontevedra, 1937) can be traced throughout his entire career. In fact, this period is characterized by a greater professional debate and a greater sensitivity to face the specific problems of Galicia produced by harmful development models. On the one hand, the creation of the new professional institutions in the seventies or the presence of Rossi or Bar Bóo as influences on Portela’s positions, the application of concepts such as Rossi's «analogous remodelling» or analytical and expressive perspectives such as that of critical regionalism will be discussed. On the other hand, some different modes of its «architecture of the territory» will be analysed, from the rehabilitation of large spaces to the practices of the «place».
