Abstract

Piet Mondrian’s links with theosophy in the early years of the 20th century provide a thread that runs through his artistic development. He began studying the philosophical ideas of H.P. Blavatsky at a very early age before moving on to the theoretical work of Rudolf Steiner. The influence of this train of thought can be seen in a series of pictorial works that are figurative in nature but highly symbolic in meaning. Operating within the parameters of theosophy, the artist delves into the floral typology of chrysanthemums and their semiotic referentiality.
