Resumen

A finales del siglo XV Jehan Henry escribió su Livre de vie active de l’Hôtel Dieu de Paris y se lo dedicó a las monjas-enfermeras que atendían el hospital. Los historiadores de la Enfermería suelen afirmar que una miniatura de este manuscrito ilustra cómo cuidaron las enfermeras a sus pacientes, pero este trabajo cuestiona el significado médico de esta imagen y la naturaleza feminizada de la enfermería medieval. El análisis de las relaciones teóricas y prácticas entre teología y medicina, y el de las reglas de las órdenes monásticas demuestran que enfermeros y enfermeras no prestaron atención sanitaria. En este trabajo pruebo que los enfermeros de los hospitales medievales encarnaban al Buen Samaritano y emplearon el cuidado al cuerpo como una excusa para ocuparse del alma de los pacientes.
