Abstract

The article at hand offers a reading of the three first novels by Miguel Ángel Hernández (Murcia, 1977) ―Intento de escapada, 2012; El instante de peligro, 2015; El dolor de los demás, 2018― considered to be ‘literary ego‑portraits’, self-portraits drawn by an autobiographical narrator who, in spite of their similarities, does not become confused with the author. The article analyzes how the self-portraits of the «I» are constructed and become the central characters of the texts. It specifically shows how they enhance the role of images and otherness. In addition, it highlights how the three narrators are alter egos of an author who, through them, appears on the scene, and plays with their masks to question their own fragilities and try to solve them.
