Abstract

El embrujado: tragedia de tierras de Salnés was published on May 23, 1913, the date of the book’s first edition. However, the process of this work was born the year before when the author offered the project to the actress Matilde Moreno, resulting in the no-torious controversy of the unsuccessful opening performance at the Teatro Español of Madrid, and the end of that attempt. However, one of the actors involved, Francisco Fuentes, started his own company, and included in his repertory ?along with others by this author? the play that was performed for the first time in 1913. This prémière in the playwright’s theatrical chrono-logy was unknown until now, since it was said to have been carried out in 1931. The article at hand describes this time of gestation, documents and analyzes the process and the critical re-ception of the opening performance, and relates it to a poetic theatre style in dialectics with the virtual aesthetics of animated theatre, which might have resulted in the theatricality key concept in which Valle-Inclán wrote his works, as affirmed by Pérez de Ayala
