Abstract

Travelling along the Italian front in the early years of the First World War, Ramón Pérez de Ayala composed a series of chronicles, first published in the daily La Prensa of Buenos Aires, which were later brought together as a single volume: Herman encadenado (Herman in Chains) (1917). Pinpointing key textual issues entailed by the adaptation of the chronicles to the single volume Herman encadenado the present study analyzes their rhetorical and ideological dimensions, assays their literary originality per se and in the light of the Spanish First World War chronicle generally, and, finally, reviews relevant features of the War Chronicle as a discursive genre.
