The novel, The Arch and the Butterfly, by Mohammed Ashaari, is studied as a mirror of contemporary Moroccan society. The arch and the butterfly are symbols of present-day Morocco: the arch symbolizes the Morocco of desire and of an impossible dream, while the butterfly, in spite of its calmness, in the novel, touches on the grotesque.
