This article aims to analyze the figure of Mr. Cogito, poetic character of Zbigniew Herbert, as a prototype of “thinker” in contemporary times, that is to say, an amateur character paralyzed by permanent and acute self-consciousness. In this light, and from the irony and compassion with which Herbert contemplates Mr Cogito, the text tries to concoct the diagnosis that Herbert’s poetry emits about the reality that the subject-artist constructs in a more or less formal way
