Abstract

The idea of Health Literacy comprises two terms that are in continuous evolution: Literacy and Health, which gives us clues to understand the complexity of the concept.  Literacy has gone from being understood as something basic, the ability to read and write, to being able to express and exchange thoughts, techniques, feelings, using various languages. Health has evolved from an individual vision to a community understanding in which the environment has a great relevance. This has meant an important change in Education for Health at School. The use of information to obtain changes in behaviour has been leaved aside to introduce research into the factors that intervene in behaviours, so that students can make free and informed decisions. At the same time, it is tried to influence the environment so that those decisions that are healthy are easier to adopt.
