Abstract

The "collegial teaching" (Finkel y Arney, 1995; Finkel, 2008) is a particular type of team teaching. It consists on the simultaneous presence of at least two teachers in the classroom, who debate on various issues relevant to the subject in the presence of students.

In this paper we present an innovative experience of collegial teaching conducted among graduate students. The subject of application is “Geographical Information Systems and territorial analysis" in archaeology. It belongs to the Master in Archaeology and Heritage, University Autónoma of Madrid (UAM). During six academic years, we have done spontaneous collegial teaching activities in the classroom (teachers’ discussions about different modes of action, different views on how to solve specific cases, according emphasis on what types of applications, etc.). The academic course 2014/2015, we have expanded and systematized our collegial teaching activities in order to assess the result that these activities have on students’ learning.

This paper shows the results (statistical figures) about the experience. This teaching methodology, in our opinion, contributes to develop the students’ research skills, and it is an essential part of critical thinking training.
