This article sets out to establish links between the Count of Lautreamont and Salvador Dali through two surrealist hybrids: the man-umbrella and the woman-machine. No sooner did the surrealists seek to invoke the Count, than he began to exert an influence that would represent a black hole from which few were able to extricate themselves. Dali’s would become one of the most prolific and fascinating tributes to this dialogue.
