The Collyer brothers’ bunker is an internal labyrinth with an organized system of self defence against the unpredictable and irreversible chaos of the outside world. Accumulations in general and collections in particular invariably respond to a complex and metaphorical duality between the internal and the external, the personal and the social. Can sterile isolation be overcome in the pursuit of a shared story? I will focus on certain artists who accumulate and on how their strategies provide an intriguing means of approaching both the known and the real. I will attempt to offer examples of microcosms whose imaginative courage connects with knowledge and builds bridges with otherness. I will look into both open and changing sets of things that are engaged in an ongoing process of renewal.
