This text offers an iconographic approach to the figure of Castelao, analysing his formal appearance in a series of selected caricatures of himself, and the meaning acquired by certain symbols characterising his image. The paper seeks to open new avenues of investigation into a multi-faceted figure who constructed an image that was publicly recognisable and alluring, but which has also had the power to withstand the passage of time and consolidate itself as an intellectual, cultural and ethical reference point that diverse groups and ideologies have turned to in order to legitimise their interests.
