Abstract

The traditional symbolic conception of the staircase, as ascending element and a place of transit, will be put aside in this paper to go into the addition of new values within the Burgundian aristocratic ceremonial during the reigns of Carlos V and Felipe II. The presence and representation of this architectural element, which typological evolution emerges under a new language, is analyzed through the study of the ceremonial practices in the staircase of the Alcázar of Madrid.
