Abstract

In Spanish the verb faltar expresses a determined meaning in context since it depends on the mental scheme used by the speaker to anticipate the existence of the subject. This contextual determination seems to have contributed to the processes of subjectification which are analyzed in this article, since there are many lexicalized exclamative constructions made possible by the verb faltar and in which a certain type of rejection, negation or surprise is expressed in the presence of an adverse situation: (no) faltaría / faltaba más, solo faltaba / faltaría, lo que faltaba, (no) faltaba / faltaría otra cosa, eso faltaba / faltaría, ni más faltaba, no más faltaba, nada más faltaba. Based on the data facilitated by CDH and CORPES, we analyze the different constructions and provide information about their meanings and formal characteristics, as well as their origin. The subjectification process has motivated the grammaticalization of certain constructions as epistemic modality markers and diverse intermediary steps have also been found on this continuum. In addition, analogical change has also been a determinant. The general evolutive scheme confirmed here is as follows: focal construction > focal construction with a negative scalar value > focal construction with a negative scalar value and phonetic emphasis > epistemic value > politeness.
