Abstract

The aim of this article is to examine different historiographic traditions from the perspective of Hispanic-Portuguese authors, specifically, those who were missionaries and were also beginner learners and what they recorded about Japanese language teaching. Since it was one of the most characteristic and complicated grammatical elements for Europeans who were beginning to study Japanese, by analyzing the “particles” category as described by those missionaries, we investigate the descriptive traits of the different linguistic traditions used at that time so as to determine the value of the texts produced by the Spanish and Portuguese missionaries in the 17th and 18th centuries.
