Abstract

This paper is a study of the cultural history of Latin language in the Philippines, focusing on literate use, written production, and neo-Latin tradition from the 16th century to the present. We study the implanting of a Western education system and the European culture of modern Humanism, from colonial elites to the negotiation, transformation, and agency adopted by local population in building a new civil society. To this end, works and texts to form a preliminary textual corpus of Neo-Latin literature in the Philippines are related and studied. By the end of the 19th century, José Rizal articulates and problematizes the role of Latin in the construction of the modern nation, and thus the most important work in Philippine history has Latin title ―Noli me tangere.
