Abstract

The present work analyzes the use of the specialized reference sources Eduardo López Bago consulted to write six of his nine medical-social novels ?La prostituta (1884), El cura (1885), El confesonario (1885), La monja (1886), La desposada (1888) and El preso (1888)? written between 1884 and 1888. In addition, it will attempt to demonstrate how López Bago generally makes use of texts from authorities when the subject, i.e. religion, philosophy, medicine or law, requires the prose to be more specific, and, in his novels, copies from them without citing the authors. In the light of this finding, the concept of plagiarism in that time will be analyzed, as well as the different types of documentary plagiarisms in which the author may incur, since they are not only limited to medicalsocial novels.
