Spanish doctors first noticed at the very beginning of the 19th century the ‘threat’ that foreign medical words posed to the Spanish medical language, not to forget the boom of terms whose origins and ways of composing were not always right nor homogeneous. These doctors did not only report this undesired situation using all the tools they could, but they also tried to look for solutions in various ways, among which one stands out ?creating specialized dictionaries, originally written in Spanish, where the meaning and correct use of terms would be stablished in opposition to those coming from other languages trying to compete with them. In this work we will be focusing on these solutions and the context in which they took place.
