Abstract

In this article we seek to look into the prosodic features of exclamatory utterances in comparison with assertive utterances in order to determine if it is a prosodically independent group or if it is made up of assertive utterances with variations in pitch. Data taken from literature as well as semispontaneous data elicited from 16 speakers from four Colombian cities (Bogotá, Cali, Medellin and Cartagena) are considered. A total of 132 data were analyzed following the considerations of the Autosegmental Model and the Spanish version of the ToBI system. The results indicate that the differences between the exclamations and the assertions are not only manifested in pitch variation and tone intensity, but also in the specific prosodic patterns associated to the expressive function.
