In this paper our attempt is to show the functionality of the resumptive pronoun strategy in Spanish with a detailed analysis of the contexts in which the pronoun is found. Our goal is to discover the reasons why the speaker chooses this relativization strategy in certain contexts. Next, we try to explain why the resumptive pronoun is used in relative clauses having certain characteristics yet not used in other relative clauses. We also pay attention to the fre-quency of pronoun use according to its relativized function. The starting point for this study is the idea that the selection of these linguistic expressions is determined by two basic aspects: processing and communicative objectives.
