Educating to prevent gender violence from the classroom: the case of Galician schools in nursery and primary level
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article presents some of the results of a larger research conducted about equality and gender violence in public schools in nursery and primary level, from the consideration of gender based violence as a serious social problem which violates fundamental human rights and is the most brutal symbol of gender inequality, and the need to approach it from the school environment through prevention form the first steps of the process of socialization and education. Based on the perception and opinions of management, which holds a privileged prism in shool, the study analyzes the attitudes of the school community as well as the strategies of school towards building a culture based on gender equality and promoting skills in the peaceful resolution of conflicts. The quality of educational materials in contributing to equality between the sexes, along with specific training for teachers on equality and tolerance, prevention and detection of gender violence, complete the research. The study combines quantitative and qualitative methodology -a survey of 340 public Galician school principals, as well as in-depth semi-structured interviews to 20 other directors-. The research demonstrates the need to advance in equality and prevention of gender based violence, and shows a week interest of school community and a scarce involvement of schools, coupled with the lack of teacher training in the subject. The results are related to other works in the issue, which identify barriers that prevent a clear progress in gender equality in and through school education, the most powerful tool that society has for a complex but essential objective, that requires research and debate.
