Abstract

COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the number of visitors and revenue of religious tourism in Mexico: the objective of this paper is to analyze the effects on the sector and the authorities’ response in years 2020 and 2021 on the state of Jalisco, through an observational study, using documentary and newspaper sources. Before the pandemic, the sanctuaries showed a high number of visitors and high economic benefits, having strategic importance for regional economy. At the religious celebration in San Juan de los Lagos, 2 million people visited in 2019, only 2,500 in 2020, Zapopan went from 1.8 million to 1,300 and Talpa only had 20 visitors the same year. These sanctuaries have keep continuity by means of social media and telecommunications, developing new relationships with pilgrims. Cooperation between local and religious authorities, traders, hospitality industry and visitors is key for religious tourism recovery in the new normal.
