Ecosystem services trade-offs caused by salmoniculture in the marine socio-ecologicial system of Chiloe Island (south of Chile).

Abstract
Ancient times. Converting multifunctional coastal-marine areas into monofunctional and intensive
coastal-marine areas provokes cost and benefits of ecosystem services. We propose a multilevel
analysis encompassing: a) synergies and trade-offs (temporal, spatial and interpersonal) between
ecosystem services (ESs), b) disaggregate each trade-off or synergy in the respective dimensions
that are presented (biophysical, ecological, socio-cultural and monetary), c) synthesizing the results
to define an impoverishment or improvement of the relationships ESs-human welfare of the socioecological
system of Chiloé. We found that the salmon industry causes more trade-offs than synergies
of ESs. We conclude that the salmoniculture in its ability to generate human welfare should
correct the trade-offs and transform them into synergies in order to contribute to the improvement
and progress of the entire socio-ecological system of Chiloé.
