Abstract

Public pension systems are one of the basic pillars on which the welfare state in developed countries is based. The recent evolution of its financial statements has questioned its sustainability in the current conditions, and opened the debate on the necessary reforms to guarantee it. In any case, the demographic factors that condition pension spending have a dynamic that is difficult to alter, so it is interesting to analyze their impact on spending, both from a historical perspective and from a future perspective. The different demographic reality of Galicia, with respect to the State as a whole, allows us to deepen this analysis, focusing as well on the parameters related to ageing, in order to adequately assess its impact on the sustainability of the system, - the ultimate aim of this work.
