Abstract

Few medieval wall paintings are preserved in La Rioja, so they are especially valuable, even though some of them have not reached us complete or in good condition. This is the case of the hermitage of Santo Asensio de los Cantos (Ojacastro), with a pictorial ensemble dating from the first third of the s. XIII and is located inside the apse. At present, we can see the scenes of the Epiphany, the Last Supper and four religious figures in the openings. The conservation of the complex is the result of outstanding efforts over time, known thanks to documentary sources. The article collects information on some of these conservation actions and offers an iconographic reading of the paintings in Eucharistic key, according to the time in which they were made.
