Abstract

Justice’s personification in different ancient divinities was translated since Middle Ages in divine justice, that is to say, the power of god to carry out this virtue. Divine justice has been displayed visually taking as reference the own visuality of human justice, sharing some attributes and their meanings, but also adding some own attributes which distinguish it of human justice. Although the depiction of divine justice originated in Middle Ages, its presence increased in Early Modern period like consequence of justice’s secularization. From these premises, we can distinguish two iconographic types of allegory of Divine justice, which we analyze through their main attributes and meanings
